Little Thoughts for Advent

Advent Day 11: How Did We Get Here?

Reading: Matthew 1 verses 1 – 17

Thought: Family trees are an incredible thing – they track our ‘geneology’ (fancy word of the day!) They show us who our parents, wider family members, grandparents, great grandparents, great – great – great grandparents… and further back ( or less ) depending on the time scale the family tree you are looking at covers! It can be fascinating to see who our ancestors were and how we got to where we are today.

I wonder if you’ve ever looked at a family tree, old family pictures or even heard stories about your family from way back and wondered what it would be like to have met them and maybe, even to have lived at the same time as them. I never got to meet my paternal (dad’s side) grandparents and over the years, as I’ve heard stories, I’ve often wondered what it would be like to have met them, to have asked questions and found out more about them from them. But, here’s the thing: I was never going to meet them because, my time on earth did not begin until quite a while after theirs had ended. Life can be funny like that sometimes, can’t it? You see, my time on earth and the plan for my life did not begin until the day I was born. No matter how often I’ve wondered about going back in time to chat with family I never got to meet or, how watching a period drama can make me wonder about putting on fabulous big dresses everyday and just focus on being a lady (I’m not sure I’d have passed for a proper one even then and I reckon, as fun as the big dresses might look, the novelty may well wear off sooner rather than later!), that wasn’t my time to live.

As we look at Matthew 1, we see Jesus’ family tree and just how far it goes back – right back to Abraham ( and, I suppose you could say we share the same forefather, as incredible as that sounds!). The record Matthew presents for us shows us the family line Jesus came from and where He fits in it all – the point at which He came to live on earth, just when the time was right. A time that was decided before creation itself – when our plans were created too!

We may wonder from time to time about living in a different time but, just as Jesus was born at just the right time, God’s perfect timing, so too, were you and me. We read in Esther about how she was ‘Born for such a time as this’ and, amzingly, as hard as it may be to get your head around, so were you.

You are here, right now, for a very special reason, to live a life that God has planned for you, if you choose to trust and follow Him. At this Christmas time, when a lot of focus can be put on family and relations, never forget that you are here, right now at this time in history, for a purpose that you and only you can fulfil. You were born for such a time as this!
